The Socialist Party of Nigeria, SPN faults the deliberate moves by the Independent National Electric Commission (INEC) to force the recent supreme court judgement that affirms INEC power to deregister National Unity Party (NUP) on other deregistered political parties specifically the SPN and 21 other political parties with favourable Appeal court judgement  that earlier nullifies their deregistration by  INEC. The appeal court judgment in question specifically ordered INEC to reverse the deregistration of SPN and 21 others because INEC failed to follow due process while implementing section 225A of the 1999 constitution as amended which empowered INEC to deregister political parties.

Therefore, the Supreme Court judgement affirming the power of INEC to deregister NUP does not affect SPN and 21 other political parties. The matter between 22 Political parties and INEC is different and quite distinguishable in term of prayer and context to the one filed by NUP. The question of whether or not INEC follow due process in exercising its power to deregister SPN and 21 other political parties is the context of the matter between 22 parties vs INEC. This is unlike NUP vs INEC that the power of INEC to deregister political parties is the bone of contention.

In fact, the same power of INEC to deregister parties was equally recognized in the Court of Appeal judgment on 22 Parties Vs INEC. Nevertheless, the same judgement still went ahead to nullify the deregistration of SPN and 21 other parties and order INEC to reinstate them on the ground that INEC failed to follow a due process in exercising its power.  The INEC appeal at the Supreme Court against this favourable court of appeal judgment is still pending as it is yet to be decided. Except for the Supreme Court upturns this judgement, it remains valid and binding on INEC. It is in the light of this, we reiterate our demand for INEC to comply with the appeal court judgement and reinstate SPN and the other 21 political parties rather than being mischievous by trying to use some media organisations to peddle falsehood and misinform the general public. Take for instance, the daily post’s report on the Supreme Court judgement on NUP was done in such a manner that gives the impression that the judgement is against all the 73 deregister political parties.

SPN condemns the kind of desperation exhibited by INEC following the supreme court judgement on NUP deregistration by trying to force the judgement  on other 73 political parties that are not party in the matter. This kind of desperation displayed by INEC and its fragrant and reckless disobedience of the judgment of the Court of Appeal to reinstate SPN and 21 other parties for over nine months now is undemocratic and unlawful.

This further showed that the so-called amendment of the constitution that preceded the deregistration of SPN and 73 other political parties after section 225A that empowers INEC to deregisters party was successfully smuggled into the constitution is a strategy of the self-serving ruling elite and INEC to condemn Nigerians to 2 or three bourgeois parties that are absolutely the same and give no real choice to the working masses. Otherwise, there is no justification for deregistering political parties because they did not score ‘electoral victory’ in highly monetized and violently rigged elections. Especially when Electoral contest, just like any other contest will churn out winners and losers.

Except this kind of obnoxious amendment is defeated Nigerians will always be forced to vote APC, PDP, APGA and other parties of the exploiters and looters. This means that the capitalist ruling elite will continue to be in power with rising cases of mass poverty, misery and joblessness in the midst of abundance while the basic infrastructure will continue to elude us as a country including unprecedented insecurity etc. It is in a quest to forestall this kind of ugly possibility, we call on the working masses and the leadership of their traditional organization like NLC, TUC and pro-working people political organization like JAF, to join us in SPN and help to build and strengthen it to be able to challenge and defeat the capitalist political parties and ruling elite and democratically manage societal resources to meet the needs of all.

President Muhammadu Buhari sends his best wishes to all Nigerians and Muslims across the globe as they mark the Eid Al Fitr following the completion of a month of fasting.

In a message signed by him, President Buhari says:

“On this blessed occasion, I wish that the Eid festival brings with it peace, safety, security, brotherhood and love amongst all.

“Unity and solidarity among all citizens, Muslims and Christians are imperative especially at a time when our country is faced with multiple challenges which are surmountable only when we come together as one.

“It is important that we remember how we share, through our faiths, common bonds that should serve to unite us and not allow ourselves to succumb to those who seek to divide us, using our two great religions, for their own selfish advantages.

“We should jointly pray against the tragic incidents of kidnapping and banditry and the desperate quest for political power expressed through blackmail against the existence of our country as a united entity.

“We must resist the temptation to retreat into our communities. I urge our political and religious leaders as well as traditional rulers to encourage our citizens to turn towards one another in love and compassion.”

According to the President, it is noteworthy and delightful to see Christians breaking fast and in some instances, extending goodwill and gifts to Muslim faithfuls during the Ramadan. “This model also shone through with Muslim groups joining Christian festivities. These are practices that promote brotherhood and forgiveness,” he says.

President Buhari also urges Nigerians to continue to observe all COVID-19 prevention measures and celebrate responsibly during the holidays.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) felicitates with Nigerians on this year’s Eid-el-Fitr to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan and urges them to use the opportunity to unite in confronting the challenges facing our nation.

The party stresses that the virtues of self-sacrifice, love, perseverance and inner peace embodied in the lessons of the holy month of Ramadan should continue to guide us as a people to face and overcome the challenges of life, particularly the evils confronting our nation today.

As a people, we are faced by all sorts of new surge in terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, vandalism; recklessness and insensitivity in governance as well as the menace of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indeed, this is the time for Nigerians to keep hope alive believing that with trust in God and unity of all, this ugly phase in the life of our nation will surely pass.

The PDP urges Nigerians to also use the occasion to pray for the nation as well as show love to one another, especially the downtrodden and the victims of the scourge of terrorism and banditry in our nation.

The party charges Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue to keep their trust in God’s infinite mercy at this critical time.

The PDP wishes Nigerian a pleasant Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

2023: INEC Has No Excuses On Electronic Transmission of Results- PDP…Demands Transparent Online Voters Registration

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will have no excuses not to use the electronic direct transmission of results in the 2023 general elections and other coming polls.

The party’s position is predicated on INEC’s announcement of its readiness to conduct online (electronic) registration of voters for future elections in the country.

The PDP notes that since INEC can is now in the position to deploy technology to conduct online registration of voters, which entails electronic transmission of voter’s data to its central server, the commission can also conduct an electronic transmission of results directly from the polling unit to its central server.

Our party calls the attention of the commission to the fact that it no longer has any excuse not to employ the direct transmission of results from polling units, which will ensure credible elections by eliminating manipulations, alterations, switching and disappearance of election results during manual collation processes.

The PDP insists that if INEC can use the electronic platform for registration of voters it could as well deploys the same technology for electronic transmission of results in future elections including the 2023 general elections.

Our party however urges INEC to ensure that the online registration of voters is credible, transparent and not open to the manipulations of desperate politicians, particularly in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP also calls on the APC leadership in the National Assembly to know that it has no further pretext to continue to sit on the Electoral Act amendment bill and frustrate genuine effort to ensure credible, free and fair elections in our country.

The party invites Nigerians to note that the only reason the APC-led administration as well as the APC leadership in the National Assembly have been using every available means to frustrate the electronic transmission of result, is that they have realized that there is no way their party can win in a transparent, free and fair election at any level in Nigeria.

We therefore urge Nigerians to intensify their efforts in the collective quest to rescue our country from misrule by adding their voices to the demand by our party for electronic transmission of results in future elections and particularly, the 2023 general elections.

Bandits Invasion of Presidential Villa Shows Buhari Can’t Secure Nigeria, Says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is alarmed by the invasion of Aso Presidential Villa by bandits and armed robbers, saying the development further points to the collapse of security command structure under President Muhamamdu Buhari’s incompetent watch.

The party says that the reported bandit assault on the residence of the Chief of Staff to Mr. President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, within the precinct of the Presidential villa, is too close to home and has heightened apprehensions over the capacity of the Buhari Presidency to secure the nation.

All over the world, the Presidential Villa, as the seat of power and national sovereignty, is the fortress of the nation that ought to have impregnable security.

As such, any breach of security, particularly by outlaws and in sequence, sends a clear danger signal to the overall security of the nation.

It is imperative to state that such security infraction, that gave way for outlaws to invade the Presidential villa in sequence, inspite of its perceptibly secured ambience, can only happen under an absentee President, who have not demonstrated the required capacity expected of his office.

The PDP also recalls the security breaches in June last year, involving shooting, violent combats, raids and free use of firearms within the precinct of the Presidential Villa, arising from a bitter squabble between members of President Buhari’s family and some security aides.

Our party is worried that if President Buhari cannot guarantee the security of the Presidential villa, then his capacity to secure the entire country is no longer assured.

The PDP therefore urges President Buhari to wake up from slumber, review his security architecture and take decisive steps, beyond his lethargic body language, to secure our nation.

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday joined the people of Taraba State in their moment of grief as they mourn Hajiya Aisha Jummai Alhassan, former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, saying that her death leaves a huge void in Nigerian politics.

Represented by a delegation led by Engineer Abubakar Aliyu, Minister of State, Works and Housing, President Buhari told her bereaved father, Alh Abubakar Ibrahim OON, Sarkin Ayyukan Muri, the Emir of Muri, Alhaji Abbas Tafida and the Taraba State Governor, Architect Darius Ishaku that the nation has lost a woman leader.

“We lost a great leader with an indomitable spirit with people, especially the womenfolk at her heart. The late Aisha Alhassan was strong, bold and people-oriented,” said the President.

He prayed to Allah to repose her soul.

A brother of the deceased and former Senator, Abdulaziz Ibrahim who spoke on behalf of the family thanked the President for making their sister a minister and assured that they will continue to be with him.

The Emir on his part described death as inevitable. He prayed for the deceased and thanked the President for his support to the people of the state. He urged him to remain calm and steadfast and act decisively to deal with the enemies of the state who he blamed for the security challenges facing the nation.

Governor Ishaku described the late Minister as one of the closest persons to him: “Once she is committed to something, she remains consistent. She was a great mobilizer. She served well as minister and did not speak lies.”

The Governor expressed the appreciation of his administration to the President for the confidence he has in him. “We appreciate Mr. President. He cares about us,” said the Governor and expressed his happiness that he did not disappoint the President by bringing back peace to the Mambilla plateau. “Mambilla is peaceful today,” he said, hoping that the solidarity and friendship between the state and the centre will continue.

Other members of the delegation were Barrister Mohammed Hassan Abdullahi, Minister of State, Science and Technology and the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

APC’s Lies Confirm Its Leaders Are Behind Moves to Slash Workers’ Salaries- PDP

…Urges Workers to Hold APC Responsible

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the knee-jerk attempt by the pretentious All Progressives Congress (APC) to deny the public declaration by the APC-led Federal Government to slash workers’ salaries, has confirmed that it is indeed the mastermind of the obnoxious policy.

The PDP stresses that the frenzy by the APC in hastily assuming the position of the mouthpiece of the Buhari Presidency, exposes a panic measure, symptomatic of being caught in its usual act.

Of course, hardened oppressors and political predators always resort to disgraceful and shameless lies when caught in the act.

That explains why the APC could expect Nigerians to forget, in a space of five days, the public declaration by the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed a review of workers’ salaries as well as the merging of agencies of government.

Perhaps the lying APC should be reminded how the Minister, at a public function organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) in Abuja, last Wednesday, unambiguously declared that there were moves to cut workers’ salaries.

In the minister’s words, “Mr. President has directed that the salaries committee that I chair, work together with the head of service and other members of the committee to review the government payrolls in terms of stepping down on costs”.

It is instructive to remind that the minister’s declaration was immediately condemned by labour unions and other well-meaning Nigerians, who described the move as unacceptable under the current excruciating economic situation.

It is therefore absurd and exposes a desperate diversionary measure for the culpable APC to attempt to distort the facts by claiming that the it was the PDP that alleged of plans to slash workers’ salaries, when it was publicly announced by the Federal Government.

This attempt by the APC to divert attention from the moves by its government to slash salaries of workers only goes to validate our intelligence that the APC is behind the plots.

It is clear that the APC is now overweighed by the burden of being exposed, but resorting to lies and diversionary measures cannot sway Nigerians.

Now that the APC is speaking for Mr. President in his manifest failure and anti-people policies, we charge Nigerians to hold the APC, as a party, responsible for any salary cut.

Nigerians should also hold APC accountable for the economic strangulation, as well as the escalated kidnapping, bloodletting and worsened insecurity in our country under the Buhari administration.

Our party restates our stance that the lying APC and its government must rescind the move to slash the salaries of workers. Instead, the APC should get its leaders to return the over N15 trillion they stole from the national coffers as well as get more competent hands to manage our ailing economy.
